Reflections on Writing For Children by Rebecca Loescher

Bio

Becky Loescher's passion for wordplay typically involves nature and its wonders. It often forms itself in verse. She enjoys infusing her poems with humor, believing that humor is a magnet for children. Many of her poems could be categorized as "creative nonfiction."

Becky taught four and five-year-olds in her private preschool, Kinderhaven, for 25 years. Purposing to reach beyond the limits of craft books, she began creating fun, educational art projects for her Kinderhaven children. Many were compiled by each child into themed books. The first question the children asked excitedly each morning was, "What are we making today?" Her grandchildren came along during those years, and as they grew, also enjoyed making a number of these. She produced themed books of many of these art projects about seasons, camouflage, vocabulary, weather, holidays, the rainforest, dinosaurs, counting, extinct creatures, world cultures, etc., which she sold when she spoke at conferences.

An animal and nature lover, Becky enjoys walking and exploring in the woods behind their home, collecting seed pods and birds' nests, and beachcombing on Martha's Vineyard beaches in any season. Their island home is enriched with the flavor of coastal "finds." She has taught quilting, writers' workshops, is an avid reader of books, including those encouraging a closer walk with God, loves travel, connecting with other writers, and the delights of writing poetry.

In June 2010 her picture book No Turn For Tern, A Martha's Vineyard Moonlight Mystery, was released. Her next Martha's Vineyard picture book, Over On the Vineyard will be released in June 2012. For more information on these and other books, see her Pinkletink Press page on this blog.

In winter, Becky lives in northeastern Pennsylvania with her husband, Friedhelm, in their family homestead. They are now down to one household pet, their surprisingly calm Jack Russell, Mia. They have three grown children. Of their eleven grandchildren, almost all are into sports, a number are artists, and one of their twin grandsons is a prolific writer of poems, stories and plays, much to everyone's delight. He writes and produces plays for family dinner theatre performances on their Martha's Vineyard porch, with parts for his brothers and cousins.
